The second Inst I received by Capt. Cross Comodore
with the London fleet Her Maty comands of the 22^d of August
for assisting of New York and on Order of the Treass of the 15^th
of November signifying their Mat^ys Comands for setting one or
more small [loaders] to cruise for illegall Traders which I have
communicated to the Councill and sent orders to all ports to find
out fitt vessells and Comanders to be forthwith Employed
accordingly and ordered that on demand of men for N York
they be forthwith dispatchd by Water, it being difficult if
possible to march new men so far in such a country and over
great Rivers without deserting

Writts are Issued for an Assembly to sitt the 15 of Aprll I
hope will contribute to that charge w^ch I need not say to you
refused by former assemblies, nor how difficult it is to raise
money on Tobacco for payments abroad as formerly experienced
and laying in the Q Rents but I shall not be wanting in my
uttermost Endevors therein, and as I have done all I can for the
well Arming and Equipping of the Militia I shall be ready to
march myself wheresoever their Ma^ties Service shall require
and by return of the fleet hope a full account of Assembly
Proceedings

I hear that Govern^r Nicholson in Maryland
has been very Busie in faulting and condemning his Ma^ties
Commission to me and to find Imputations against me
for my going to Maryland on the death of Coll Copley and made
Complaint home of my receiving of five hundred pounds, I had
by advise and consent of the Councill there on acc^t of Salary as
commander in chief, all acknowledging my Service for the peace
and Quiet of that Place of which I gave acco^t to the Lords of
the Committee and Treas^ry and shall always be ready to submit
to their Ma^ties and well assured shall not be censured unheard
in which I pray a continuance of your just favor if occasiond
& remain
